Snatched

In the early days of my fashion career in New York, I would famously wear a dress that I’d purchased at a $10 store on 14th Street with a pair of $350 Prada pumps that I had saved up for by eating packaged ramen on repeat in order to afford. I fooled everyone—even my colleagues at Marie Claire—into thinking my entire look was designer and my love of high-low dressing was born. I learned quickly that one stand-out quality piece that can be worn with different options is the key. Whether a jacket, shoe or accessory, spending money for one lasting piece can elevate a simple (ie: inexpensive) outfit to outstanding or even become your signature. Take your favorite jeans and a t-shirt combo and add a great belt to snatch in your waistline and polish off the look. It immediately takes your ‘fit from casually thrown on, to intentionally chic. Throw a blazer over your shoulders and tie a silk scarf around your neck, and you’ve gone from day to evening.
