Back in the 90’s, Paris Hilton was a guest on David Letterman and he asked her if she’d ever been to a Walmart, and Paris replied no. Dave pushed the interview further by asking her what she thought they sold at Walmart, to which she replied, “I don’t know, walls?” Even though it sounded ridiculous, I would have answered similarly, as I had never been to a Walmart until the break between a friend’s wedding and their reception in Peru, Illinois circa 2007 ish. Dressed in our wedding guest attire and baffled that the local diner wouldn’t make an iced coffee, “That’s not in our system,” our friend group wandered the small town and ended up at the Walmart where we marveled at what they had, but mostly shared incredulous exclamations over the firearms being sold an aisle away from the rollerskates. My second visit was last weekend, in Burbank, CA where I was hoping to get my dog a kiddie pool to cool off in. To my surprise, Scoop (the very same store we would shlep to in the then up-and-coming section of the meat packing district of downtown Manhattan) now has a collection at Walmart, after disappearing from the fashion landscape in 2016. I learned that the designer Brandon Maxwell is the creative director (of Scoop as well as Free Assembly) and couldn’t help but peruse the racks while I was there. I came away with the dress below (long on me, so I am taking it up) but for $20, it rivals any decent Dôen dupe. Other pieces that were in demand:
