Mary Jane
Who, might you ask, is the namesake of the eponymous shoe? Though versions of Mary Janes can be traced as far back as King Henry VIII, the moniker came about thanks to the Buster Brown comic by R.F. Outcault in 1902, who gave Buster’s sweetheart his own daughter’s name, Mary Jane, and featured both characters wearing the strapped shoes. Later, The Brown Shoe Company secured the rights and marketed the shoes using the name Mary Janes. Fast forward to today where the Mary Jane style has not only endured, it does the seemingly impossible—is beloved across multiple generations—from toddlers to teens, from popstars to parents and everyone in between.
