As I have gotten older, temperature regulation has become as time consuming as a part-time job for me. Hot flashes, icy air conditioning and temperatures hovering around 100 degrees outside doesn’t help. Living in LA these past years, I’ve noticed a pattern—dress for the weather outside, but always have a layer (or two) on hand. Even if I’m just running around, to be safe, I start with a tank, camisole or other flimsy top as my base, knowing that at some point I will be tearing my top layer off in a panic, usually while in traffic on the 101. And while every morning my daughter wears a sweatshirt over her uniform—even on these 95 degree days—”The classrooms are freezing, mom!” I get it. We’ve had many family “discussions” about what temperature to keep the AC thermostat at (full disclosure: ours isn’t calibrated correctly and reads hotter than it really is) and have settled on 76 during the day and 74 seems to be the sweet spot at night, and an even 70 when we eventually put on the heat. That said, this time of year is particularly tricky to dress for, as the transition from summer to fall isn’t instantaneous, and the temperature fluctuation can span more than 30 degrees some days. So ensure your cool factor (literally and figuratively) with these breezy pieces and simply pair with your favorite layer.
