Independence
When I was 5 we moved out of New York City for upstate New York. It must have been in early summer, as the flags and red, white and blue bunting had already been put up around town in anticipation for July 4th, and I couldn’t for the life of me understand how everyone there already knew it was my birthday, since we’d just moved in. Until then, I’d been told that the parades and fireworks and red, white and blue hoopla was all for me, that is until I met Mary Nelson, my first friend from across the street, who couldn’t wait to blab the truth to me about Independence Day. So Happy 250 America! You don’t look a day over 249, dahling.
