Out of the many lovely Bat Mitzvah gifts my daughter received, one was truly unforgettable. She was given the gift of travel with a trip to Europe from her cousins and I, her lucky companion, got to tag along. Her dad, working in France for a month, planned to meet up with us after our adventure so we could all visit family in Spain together, once he wrapped. Our first mother-daughter stop was Paris, but to escape the heatwave, we ventured to the South of France on a green seated commuter flight (akin to the Hampton Jitney days of old) proud of our packing skills with only carry-ons and my high school French to get us by. Our fellow weekenders were decidedly chic, an elegant couple next to us on the flight used their row’s empty seat for her adorable white leather Alaïa tote, below, which I ogled then googled and found here (on sale!) just before landing.

The spot we stayed in was local, quiet, with a mix of vacationers from all over the world, but since English was not preferred, one of our favorite pastimes was wading in the Mediterranean and creating elaborate backstories for the other guests, our own script of HBO’s (Off) White Lotus. (Her Jennifer Coolidge impression is waayyyy better than mine.) One of our favorite characters staying at our hotel was a fabulous older Italian woman who wore large dangling earrings to the pool each day and these hard not to love Bottega Veneta sunnies, above.
