When I was young there was a commercial my family used to love. It was for Wendy’s and featured a Soviet fashion show. The joke was that every time the woman strutted down the dank catwalk she was wearing the same gray utilitarian dress, but held a flashlight to differentiate for eveningwear, and a beachball for swimwear. We thought it was hilarious, but it also may have been the first time I realized there were different collections each season in fashion. Years later, as a magazine fashion editor who regularly attended the fashion shows in New York’s Bryant Park, I still hadn’t truly grasped the concept of the elusive resort/cruise collection nor the rhyme or reason for who showed one or not. To me, resort/cruise seemed arbitrary and felt as excessive as it sounded. Who were these people who required an entire collection devoted to holidaying someplace warm? Fast forward to today, where spring break trips are splashed across everyone’s social media platforms, jet lag is a badge of honor and a fab capsule resort collection that fits in a carryon is the unicorn everyone is trying to catch. Below, some pieces to add to yours. Beachball not included.
