I’m obsessed with Love Story on FX/Hulu, the buzzy mini series about Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and JFK Jr., mostly because I remember that exact time living in New York so vividly—what I wore, who I ran around town with and where we frequented—and it brings me right back to that early 1990’s post-college, first job life. It seemed as if everyone who lived in Manhattan back then had their own tale of a JFK Jr. sighting during his just-a-regular-guy-living-in-the-city-among-the-people phase. I will never forget the night my friend Lori and I were on 23rd St. either just having left the Chelsea movie theater or simply walking by it, and as we headed west to the corner of 8th avenue, we passed John John and a couple of his friends on the street. We immediately grabbed each other’s hands in stunned disbelief and squealed into each other’s shoulders, gobsmacked by the sight of him. I turned around to make sure my eyes did not deceive me and he was already turned around, checking out my very beautiful and very blonde friend. It absolutely made our night and became my go-to cocktail party fodder over the years since. I believe my friend Gwen rode an elevator in the Hachette building with him and his skis (or was it snowshoes?) as there had been a major snowstorm in the city and he was planning on skiing home. But it was Carolyn’s parallel fashion life, she working at Calvin Klein, me working at Barneys New York while interning at Harper’s Bazaar, along with her style (the original definition of quiet luxury) that really left us all captivated. She was one of us, it felt, and we all admired her classic, timeless, chic look. Below, some wardrobe staples with a nod to Carolyn’s iconic and enduring minimalist style, that lives on.
