My first real job I owe to one of my best friends’ dad, Papa Pete. He had deep connections in publishing in New York, once tried to pay for a meal he was treating us recent college grads to with his Batman novelty card just for the laugh, and made a phone call to the then Editor-In-Chief of the newly launched American Marie Claire magazine, on my behalf. I had been interning at Harper’s Bazaar while working at Barneys New York 17th Street, and so began my official fashion career. I was the second assistant to the Editor-In-Chief, basically Andy from The Devil Wears Prada, except my initial wardrobe was much better in my early days than hers, thanks to the damage I did while working part time at Barneys, armed with my 40% discount, 50% twice a year, wink. So in honor of The Devil Wears Prada 2 coming out this week and to all of the other fashionistas who spent their lunch hours getting yelled at by the Soup Nazi to secure her boss’s lunch (true), had to try to zip up her boss’s too small dress in her office while they cried because it didn’t fit (true), or had to deliver the make-up-of-the-book (the prototype for the issue) to her boss’s house in Hastings-On-Hudson pre-Uber (also true), I will be wearing Cerulean blue in solidarity and saying a big thank you (and get well soon!) to Papa Pete. Oh, and if you find something you love in this list, feel free to charge it to Batman.
