I’ve always called them button down shirts, until now. When shopping online, I noticed a pattern. Searching button downs garnered mostly men’s shirt results and button ups, women’s. I dug deeper to find button down refers to a shirt that also has a button down collar and a button up is well, what I think of when I think button down. So I guess all button downs are button ups, but not all button ups are button downs. Either way you button them, they are an easy, chic and classic wardrobe staple that look equally at home with jeans or over a bathing suit, as they do paired with a ball skirt on the red carpet.
