Though I am a stylist, there are a few fashion faux pas mom moments my daughter won’t let me forget. One was when she was 6 and she’d received an invitation for a birthday party with an Annie theme. I ordered the costume, dressed her up, only to walk in to the party and see that only the birthday girl was wearing the iconic red dress and red curly wig, no one else. My girl burst into tears, dropping the gift she was carrying at the door and I ran out to grab any loose clothing from the car to throw over her. The second was more recent. Over the holidays, she was invited to a new friend’s holiday breakfast, which I advised her to dress casual for. I may have even thrown out “Wear pjs, it’s breakfast!” much to my detriment. How would I have known that the adorable boy her age there with the Cobra Kai sweater and good manners not only was an actor with a zillion instagram followers, but that he would borrow the host’s guitar and serenade the party (everyone gathered into the living room as heavy LA rain drops fell) with his impromptu acoustic cover of Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, leaving all of us speechless. Except when we got in the car. Pajamas?!?! REALLY?!!! MOM! Urghhhhh, I’m so mad at YOU!!! AND YOU CALL YOURSELF A STYLIST?!? Ouch. But I bet if she had had pajamas like these, she’d agree that they deserve to be worn out on the town:
